The Vernal Pools Are Shrinking in the Barrens

The vernal pools are shrinking in the Scotia Barrens. We have not had enough rain to fill them, and the amphibians may have been wise enough to move on by now. But there are still some pretty ones, like this, where the waters are like a green and shining eye turned toward Heaven; or maybe more like a light upon the landscape. The day was cool, and breezy, and gorgeous, and so we two young lovers went walking in the woods; the woods so green.

Never forget, as a man once said, that Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads!

The song: John Denver, Cool and Green and Shady.
