Skipper Chypre

I love skipper butterflies. I photographed some last week near Cambridge but I shot my first of the season at home today. My image is the rear view of a male small skipper, also known as golden skipper, on clover. He's so lovely and fresh. The dark curved line on his wings is the sex brand or scent mark. It's made up of specialised scent scales which release a pheromone which is irresistible to females. Green-veined whites smell of lemon, marbled whites of musk, wall browns of chocolate cream and meadow browns of old cigar box. I haven't been able to find out what he smells of. Could be chypre as it rhymes. That's like CK One or Chanel No19.

I've added an image to extras of a rose chafer on hogweed. What an amazing big beetle this is. It dwarfs the flower beetles.
