The sun was disappearing behind the Western Ranges while it was slack tide. Mirror-like conditions prevailed silhouetting the feeding heron and an estuary sandbank.


After so many recent wet days we are now in the grip of a particularly cold spell. It is unusual that the whole of New Zealand has been hit with such cold temperatures at the same time - usually the South Island is well ahead of our northern neighbours.

Yesterday we celebrated the shortest day of the year.
