Far north

Today was the furthest north we are going. The main image is the wonderful Dunbeath Castle in Caithness only 40 miles by road from John O’Groats. Shortly after I took this picture the haar rolled in and the castle was just a ghostly presence. Amazingly the walled garden (first extra) seemed 10 degrees warmer inside its high walls that keep out the wind. The plants were all so colourful and lush.

After reluctantly tearing ourselves away, we headed south again to Dunrobin Castle, seat of the Earl of Sutherland. Such a different place, a high Victorian “Disney” castle (second extra) looking down on a formal garden (third extra) just above the high tide level.
