Cycling & a War Monument...

Cycling in the neighbourhood I passed by this monument. It’s about Battlefield “de Heuvel” (“the hill”); the name doesn’t refer to a hill, but to a farm called “de Heuvel”(”the Hill”). The battle around “de Heuvel” took place from 26th September until  4th October 1944. It took place in the Betuwe area, north of Nijmegen (liberated by the allied forces during operation Market Garden) and south of Arnhem (still occupied by the Germans after operation Market Garden). The Germans were forced to withdraw to the North side of a small river the Linge, from where they could resist further attacks from the allies and this was the front here until the spring of 1945. The farm “De Heuvel” was destroyed during this battle… @ Bemmel, the Netherlands
