The Old Town of Stavanger is full of colourful wooden shipping warehouses on the quays contrasting with the modern Petroleum Museum which was designed to resemble an oil platform after oil was discovered nearby in 1969 making Stavanger a major oil centre. It was the historic Gamle Stavanger (old town) that interested us. Almost all the buildings in the centre are small wooden buildings dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.  It was not uncommon to dismantle a house and rebuild it elsewhere if the owner wanted to move so some of the houses were originally built elsewhere.  The steep cobbled little streets are lined with colourful houses decorated with flowers and there are numerous good street artworks around.  From the Fire Watchtower on the hill there were views of many more wooden houses beyond the harbour, bridges linking islands, oil related boats and platforms, and in the distance snowy peaks.
The collage is of some “water” scenes from the days.  A couple of times we went under bridges, with inches to spare and several times passed ferry boats, at least one of which carried cars across to road tunnels through the high mountains. Sometimes we were going through a really narrow channel between islands turning sharp left and right with rocks and cliffs just yards from the boat. Each evening we were fortunate to see the setting sun as we sailed out towards the sea with the last sunset photo having been taken at 25 to midnight.
While I do not really like cruise ships it was an ideal way to see different parts of Norway with my sister and her husband who has health problems
