The Mystery Doorknob Insect

I found this chap on the front door knob today. I though it was a bit of thistledown (in April!) and brushed it off, and it flew to a nearby bit of wood. It's been there most of the day. It doesn't want to move - just shuffles abut a bit if I touch it. I've looked through my insect book and can't find anything remotely like it.

It's about 4-5 cm wide - what I presume is its wingspan, if they are wings; it doesn't seem to fold them. Maybe they are feathery antenna, in which case, where are its wings?
