Garden of Allington Lock Keeper’s House

Sitting relaxing watching the highlights of the 5th day’s play of the 5th test between England and India. Until this summer it hasn’t been a pleasant experience following English test cricket. This year against New Zealand and latterly India it’s been like a dream. Perhaps it is?

We’d driven over to Waitrose on the other side of town this morning for some shopping and a walk along the River Medway to Allington lock which is a pleasant place to stop for a coffee. The Environment Agency has done a fine job with the gardens of two lock keepers houses here.

At the allotment this afternoon it was a case of more weeding with some planting out of French beans and brassicas. Very disappointed to find something had made a bed on top of my carrots which were underneath a cloche. Carrots flattened and pulled out. How come?

We’ve had very little rain in the last month, the soil is very dry which is disheartening as crops, such as potatoes, stopped growing with yields disappointingly low.
