Vikings

Today's the day ..................... to burn your boats

It was the very last day today, that the Galloway Hoard ' Viking Age Treasure' will be on display in Kirkcudbright.

So there was a farewell reception in the town this evening.  Andy Nicholson, the County Archaeologist, who had been very much involved in its initial discovery, gave a short speech about its importance and significance to the wider world.  There was music and refreshments for an hour before we joined in the Viking Parade to the harbour (see extra).  And there we witnessed the symbolic ceremonial burning of the Viking Longship.

Once further research has been carried out, some pieces of the Hoard will eventually return to be put on permanent display here - but just for now, we have to say a fond farewell .....................
