Saltaire

The day started with the decent through the spectacular drop of the Bingley Five Rise locks quickly followed by the Three Rise Locks. Assisted by Canal and River Trust volunteers who ensure no one makes a mess of things(!!) in the complex setup, we were soon on our way again with a relatively short journey to Saltaire. If you like a bit of industrial history this is a fascinating place, a whole community constructed in one man’s vision (Sir Titus Salt) of a better working and social environment for his mill trade workforce. Fortunately another entrepreneur in the late 1980s ensured the epic mill buildings have survived and flourished as an arts and retail centre. Significant amounts of David Hockney’s work is on permanent exhibition. Whilst Annie studied this afternoon, the rest of us visited the mill buildings to learn more and enjoy what was in show,

An excellent Indian meal tonight, just up the towpath in Shipley.
