Wall of names

Today we visited the Shoah Wall of Names Memorial. This is a new memorial officially opened in Vienna in November 2021 for the Jewish children, women and men from Austria who were murdered in the Shoah. It’s intention is to foster an awareness of remembrance, for present day Austria, as well as for its future generations.

It is peaceful, beautifully constructed, with simple gardens. There are over 65,000 individual names engraved in stone blocks, a poignant and moving reminder of human lives destroyed by hate.

In the extra is one of the plaques at the entrance to the memorial. In German, Hebrew and English, the Austrians acknowledge that countless of them participated in the mass murder of the Jews between 1938 - 1945.
