Sunset from the hockey field

Yup... another sunset... this time taken in the direction of the setting sun. I liked the little line of trees on the crest of the hill and wished again that I had a better camera. Particularly when driving home and the moon was rising over the sea and looking huge and golden. You could see the "man in the moon" but no way could my phone camera capture that.

What sort of gear would one need to take a photo of the face of the moon? If it could be done without a telescope. Just to be able to take what I saw.
