Piper down

I studies engineering at university so feel I can normally grasp how machines work. But when it comes to my combi-boiler, I'm completely lost. I wonder what all the pipes are for, and why can't they just be straight?

I once saw a heating engineer dismantle part of the boiler to replace a part. When I walked into the kitchen, it looked like he had all the parts of the Space Shuttle laid out on the floor...and he didn't even have a manual!
