Wetlands (very)

Christchurch is on track for its wettest July (since we started keeping records).

It's been wet here in Auckland too; heavy rains with little let-up. I'm not complaining (no rain yet today) — it's just an observation.

On the radio, on my way to the doctor (nothing serious), I hear that rivers need to flood in order for regeneration, as is true of the regeneration that comes after forest fires.

I am reminded of what Picasso said: Every act of creation begins with an act of destruction.

On the way home, a quick detour to Waiatarua Wetland Reserve. The ground is sodden; the trees bare. Not many people are out on a weekday, but this is a popular spot on the weekend, particularly for dogs and the people they bring to walk with them.

PS. An hour later and it's raining heavily again, making up for lost time.
