Teenage Avocets

Today I went with Pete and Chris to Frampton Marsh, where they're carrying out an invertebrate survey of the sea banks. I was also surveying, trying to define the limits and approximate size of the population of Slender Hare's-ear, which has its main Lincolnshire population here. I had expected it to be flowering, but although there were buds, it's still a little way off being in bloom.

Things were relatively quiet on the bird front, though there were good numbers of Avocet, including numerous juveniles, as well as moulting Black-tailed Godwits and a few Spoonbills. I hadn't realised how feisty the Avocets are - the adults were seeing off any other birds that dared to come into their territory, including much larger gulls. The juveniles seemed a bit less quarrelsome.
