WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

By lizzie_birkett

They’ve Landed!

My poem says it all.
We’ve had a lovely day getting to know Tonya and Yurii.
Tonya’s English is quite good but Yurii doesn’t really speak any.
There was some welling up when Tonya spoke of her Mum and her home in Lviv but she didn’t actually cry. Brave young people.
When she found out I have a sewing machine her eyes lit up. She said when they left Lviv they had only an hour to pack everything they could in their car including her sewing machine. But when they got to the border they weren’t allowed to take the car so they had to just take their suitcases.
They are very gentle people. We already found we have lots in common.
Tonya is an artist, plays guitar and sings, sewing and Yurii is a photographer and is learning IT. Both like cooking Yay! I told them I don’t so I’ll be washer upper!

We’re all tired now so will be off to bed soon.

I wrote the poem on the way back from the airport.

Departures/Arrivals

Airports - full of emotion
Laughter, impatience and tears
Happy holiday makers
Zooming off once a year
Or refugees, boarding a plane
For the very first time
Waving goodbye, shedding tears
All they’ve ever known left behind
We’re waiting impatiently in arrivals
Passengers start coming through
It slows down, the place is emptying
And there’s still no sign of you
Then suddenly you’re there
Dragging your suitcases
From photos we exchanged
We recognised your faces
Welcome to our country
We can’t wait to get to know you
We understand you need some peace
After all that you’ve been through

Goodnight and thank you for all the lovely comments, stars, and hearts.
:-) X
