A House by the Side of the Road

There was a cross stitched sampler by our door growing up which said, "Let me live in a house by the side of the road and be a friend to man."  My grandmother stitched it in 1941 for my parents when they married.  It now hangs in my hall.  It really suits my little farmhouse which is literally by the side of the road.  It was built in 1851.  Most houses were close to the road during that time and, of course, the road was much narrower and dirt back then.  Harvey's lilies fill the door yard now along with phlox and heliopsis.  It makes a pleasant sight, I think.
