On the River

…Elbe, here by the means of Barby reaction ferry. Before we have used the ferry at Breitenhagen to cross the river to the east side. The buoys mark the tethers of the vessel to warn passing ships. Being driven by the river’s draft only, the energy saving device appears amazingly up to date. Only two small electric engines are needed to control the cable. - The first extra has been taken a little upstream where the river Saale joins the Elbe. The second extra shows St John’s church at Barby, founded as a Franciscan monastery in the 12th century, and architecturally unchanged since the time.
