I love how sometimes one thing leads to another, a chance conversation at bridge led to an invitation for J and I to visit Alan and Andrea’s garden, close to the castle in Spofforth.
Alan is an unassuming amazing naturalist - with incredible knowledge and enthusiasm for wildlife both in his garden and beyond. Numerous bird boxes are scattered round the garden, and in their sitting room, a taxidermid (is that a word?) kingfisher and sparrowhawk that met their demise flying into the window. .He has also made his own moth box - which was a real delight.
I’ve never seen a moth box before, - and the opening of it felt like Christmas, moths nestled in layers of egg boxes, unknown gifts being reavealed one by one - the blip is a selection. Most of us would agree that the decline of insects is another symptom of climate change, and sadly moth numbers have dropped dramatically. Apparently one of the most popular books currently being borrowed from Harlow Carrs library is Silent Earth, averting the insect apocalypse, on this topic.
