Heron

My sister’s neighbor has a large pond that is home to a variety of wildlife including a snapping turtle and many bullfrogs. This part of Michigan is still suffering from a dry spell, and the water level of this pond has dropped considerably. I noticed some movement at the edge of the water, but it was too far away to identify the animal. Once again, my camera’s digital zoom feature came in handy, and I was surprised to see a barely visible Great Blue Heron (Ardea herodias) hunting in the shallow pond. He was probably after the frogs, or their tadpoles. I am sure they are much easier to catch with the water so low.
