Tiny wren

Weighing only 10 grams, Superb Fairywrens are common on the east coast of Australia. I photographed this female on the shore of a small lagoon behind Boulder Beach nearby. The male (extra) is much more brightly coloured. It's unusual (to me, anyway) to find them on the ground - they are usually darting in and out of low bushes and not easy to photograph.

David Attenborough is said to have remarked that this wren is the most promiscuous of all birds. Neither he nor I are responsible for this poem:

While the hen is quietly sitting
On her eggs, the male is flitting
From branch to branch and tree to tree, looking for a date!
But don't judge this incongruity
Of his flagrant promiscuity,
For this behaviour is indulged in by his less flamboyant mate!!

If you really want the whole poem, here it is.

Thanks dbifulco for hosting Tiny Tuesday this month.
