Type Bait

This kind of stuff, these random 'events' on our course, are what help me be sure graphics is more than just 'a job to pay the bills'.

The first years were asked to select their favourite letterform, cut it out of a piece of mountboard, paint it, sign it and hang it up in their studio. The second and third years were then asked to vote for their favourite.

The prizes: a bronze period, a silver colon and a gold ellipsis.

Just to see a hundred students crowded in a room talking so oddly enthusiastically about typefaces was brilliant. A beautiful Johnston q (seen here - the swashy-er one) got first prize. I have no idea what makes a beautifully formed letter, but enough people seemed to agree this was one of them...

This type-nerdyness was then followed by a somewhat more illustration-y affair, for Haydn's birthday. Lovely bunch of people, of whom most I really would like to see more of.
