St Mary the Virgin Church, Thurnham

Quick stroll before breakfast to this old church to find a geocache. The church is set just off the Pilgrims' Way about a third of a mile south from the ruins of the 12th Century Thurnham Castle.

Thurnham is one of the oldest parishes in the borough and is mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1085 which lists a church and a local population of “some 150 souls”.

St Mary's church has certainly been in existence since Norman times and probably before that. The pre-Norman church is a Grade 1 listed building with parts dating from the 12th century.
