Our corvid relatives

Just about every day for the past fourteen years, I have watched our crows fly downtown at sunset. I set my inner clock by their movements, feeling great affection for this little city and its crows.

The skyline has changed in the past year--we have another shiny tall building reflecting the sinking sun now. Sadly, we have almost no housing for poor and middle-income people. The number of tents on sidewalks and bodies under the eaves is increasing by the day. I look at the beauty and grieve.

A friend of mine posted this succinct analysis on Twitter: "People of color, people with disabilities, and people living in poverty called for defunding police and investing in communities. Affluent white people called for more police, but refused to pay taxes for them. So politicians hired more police and defunded education."

That wraps it up. But the crows and the sunset are gorgeous.
