First

The first of the autumn soup days.  Wet and drizzly for the first day of the hosepipe ban and chilly too at only 18C.  Perfect day for a souper lunch using up a glut of courgette.
The past few days have seen the sky blacken with jackdaws.. I have never seen so many gathering together here before.  The birds are reappearing around the house.. the lawn is more interesting for the blackbirds and the woodpeckers now that there is a little moisture in it. Easier to get at the worms and the ants.  The thrush has been using our front path as a hammer to smash the snails on but I was intrigued to see it was being closely watched by the blackbird from the wall above.. I wonder if I hadn't mistakenly interrupted the feast whether the blackbird would have pounced on the thrush at the appropriate moment to win the prize.
