Loki (Thursday 25th August 2022)

This afternoon was spent in Trowbridge. Loki was mostly curled up on a cushion in the conservatory. I attempted some close-ups but neither of us were feeling inspired.

I well remember standing transfixed over the turntable the first time I heard this performance, having found the single in a bargain bin in Walsall one Saturday and bought it on sight because it was on the Stax label. In the UK this was actually the B-side of It's Catching but was always my preferred side. Mable John only spent a couple of years at Stax. On this track she is backed by Isaac Hayes (who co-wrote it)  on piano, with the MG's and the Memphis Horns.
She'd also had a stint at Motown but most of her singing career was with Ray Charles as one of the Raelettes, for whom she was also the director. She was the sister of Little Willie John, and when he died in 1968 she recorded Need Your Love So Bad, his signature tune, in tribute.
