Midges v Birgit & Bert . 1–0

I’m afraid Scotland has lost two tourists , maybe forever. The Scottish midges and
bedbugs have won a war they waged against blipper Birgit and Bert as they cycled the west coast , the Hebrides, Mull and Skye. It has been so bad that the tents that made the journey from the Netherlands with them have only been used twice because they had to resort to hostels and hotels to escape the midges. It was unfortunate that they then fell foul of bedbugs. Unlucky or what!
Perhaps it would have been better had they not chosen the year of the midge and this month to attempt their  700 mile odyssey in the beastie’s home territory. To be fair it seemed that Birgit was the most affected. They didn’t appear to like the taste of Bert, maybe because of his copious application of Deet.

They  came for supper after spending today in Edinburgh. It seemed an added insult that it was a wet night, not one where we could have sat on the patio and admired the view. Despite that, we had a wonderfully convivial evening and I was sad to see them  cycle off into the night, especially as they might really mean never to land on our shores again.
