County Square

This is County Square, Paisley and the grey building at the back of the photograph is the main railway station for the town while the red sandstone building on the left is a pub/restaurant. This red building was once the General Post Office and it was from there that the good people of Paisley heard that war had been declared on Germany in August 1914. There being no radio or television the Prime Minister could not broadcast personally to the nation so the news was telegraphed to the main post offices throughout the kingdom.

At right angles to the station there used to be the local council headquarters, court and prison built in much the same style to the GPO. However that was knocked down in the "modernisation" of the town in the late 1960s. Sadly it just missed being conserved!
