Damascus

This was taken from the rooftop of the wonderful Beit-Al-Mamlouka at sunset. This was one of the most special places that I have ever had the privilige to stay in. It was the first boutique hotel in Damascus's old city, and the faithful restoration of this 17th century property was both a labour of love for its owner, and also the subject of her PhD thesis! In October 2007, other properties were on the road to restoration in the hope of a burgeoning tourist industry.

Damascus is on the list of my top 5 places that I have ever visited. I understand that the centre of the city has been largely spared from the damage that has afflicted some of the suburbs. However, the livelihoods of many have been affected. Tourists are long gone and reportedly residents do linger long after sundown.
