Small Heath

A day of hedge cutting at my late father's garden. It was quite dull which was ideal for hedge cutting, less suitable for butterflies but I was visited by a few Large White and Green-veined White and this freshly emerged Small Heath. One of the few butterflies whose name has remained unchanged since Petiver designated it as the Small Heath back in 1699. He later suggested the 'Golden Eyed Heath' and the 'Silver Edged Heath' while others suggested the 'Small Gatekeeper' and the 'Least Meadow Brown'.
