A Pod of Pelicans

Brown pelicans - to be precise. Other collective nouns for pelicans are: a pouch, a scoop, a squadron or - if they are fishing as a group - a fleet. These guys were flying down the beach when we were on Assateague this morning, but not actually fishing per se.


Brown pelicans are one of the species that were nearly wiped out by DDT - but they, like the bald eagle and the peregrine falcon and the osprey, etc. have made a strong recovery since DDT was banned.
