Ring of Brodgar, Orkney

We spent the morning in Stromness wandering around the old streets, hardly a sole was around. The Pier Arts Centre has a wonderful collection of early 20th century art made up primarily from the works gifted by Margaret Gardiner. The building itself is impressive show casing the art well. Once it was the agency and store for the Hudson Bay Company.

The afternoon was all about the “heart of Neolithic Orkney”. First the Standing Stones of Stenness and then we joined Historic Scotland’s ranger tour of the Ring of Brodgar. 27 of the original 60 stones are still upright. The structure could be up to 3000 years old but no one knows for sure what it’s purpose was. Regardless, it leaves an impression.

Back to Kirkwall for tea we got out of the wind. We were pleased to have got through the day without rain!

Liz Truss met the Queen at Balmoral today to formally take up the post of Prime Minister.
