Quod oculus meus videt

PoliNations, Birmingham

We tried the bus into Birmingham this morning, something in hindsight we probably won't do again as the first one was early (and we missed it), the second one was late (and we'd almost given up hope) and then on our return, despite catching the right number bus it terminated before we got home!  Back to the train as our least worst option, environmentally.

We headed into Birmingham for a little bit of shopping, but also to see the PoliNation Installation in Victoria Square.  It really was impressive and builds on the Festival around the Commonwealth Games.  I've added a few extras to give a flavour of what to expect.  I just couldn't resist the main photo when the young child gripped the edge of the metal petal!

One of the consequences of the bus stopping before it reached home was that we were able to visit the Leather Training Centre in Walsall.  It isn't open to the public but the trainer, Krista kindly opened the door and we had a good chat with him about the background to the centre.  Apparently, it has been set up by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers to pass on the skills of master saddlers to apprentices.  From what we were told this passing on of knowledge and experience has been sadly lacking in recent years and many of the artisans are retiring and leaving the trade.  One consequence is that the trainer, Krista has come from Sweden to pass on his knowledge, perhaps testament to the short sightedness of those in the trade in the UK.  He explained that many younger apprentices are only taught certain parts of the skills needed to make a saddle,  because anyone with all the skills is likely to be head hunted by other companies desperate to replace their aging workforce.

Hopefully, this enterprise will help a trade with a great history in Walsall.
