Its that Dead Dragonfly Again

Following a conversation on one of the RPS Facebook groups I decided to have a play this afternoon with Focus Stacking with the Canon Connect App.

The problem with the mirrorless Canon R compared with the other Canon mirrorless cameras, the lower cost Canon RP and the more expensive R6 and R5, is that Canon have failed to add focus stacking into the firmware on the R

You can obviously just use all the traditional methods we have used over the years, focus rail or moving the focus of the lens or find a work around.

To my knowledge there are two workarounds.

- Helicon sell a Helicon Focus Ring that automates the camera to take a number of images at different focus point through a dedicated phone app. This works very well all be it a lot slower than a camera with built in focus stacking.
- The other alternative is to use the Canon Connect App, something I had not done until today. With this app you ‘manually’ nudge the focus on the phone screen take a picture and nudge it again. I managed 60 shots in about a minute.

The final image was created from 60 images and stacked in Helicon Focus software in the ‘pyramid mode’ this time. Quite pleased with the result.

A point to note my dead dragonfly is only two days from passing away and it has lost  a significant amount of its colour
