Castle Dyke

Castle Dyke is an ancient monument in Ashcombe. No castle but a hillfort which is referred to as ‘Eordbirig’ in a charter of 1044. From my point of view it's a lovely mixed woodland which seems to consist of mainly scots pine and beech.

It's Wide on Wednesday hosted this week by steveng. The theme is 'The Natural Environment (nature)'. What I like about nature is that it tries to cope with the worst we humans can chuck at it, although it's struggling with the pressure now. If the last human left earth it would soon recover and ivy and moss would soon be growing up the Shard and the Empire State building and softening the hard contours.

This place has no doubt been changed dramatically over the centuries. I imagine that as a hill fort it had a clear line of vision in all directions but now these beautiful and ancient trees grow throughout the area. I love the shapes, the colours and the dappled light in this image.
