Hoping for a hoopoe

We were twitching today
There has been a hoopoe in Torquay at the Quinta Road Allotments. This exotic looking rare passage bird has been filmed and photographed. Today we went to see if it was there. You have to look from the gate as it is private but the allotment holders are kind and will let birdwatchers in. It was so wet and miserable no one was there. There were four other birders, and two , who had journeyed from Swindon and Eastbourne. The only other time we have done any twitching was in Wales, standing with a large group on a coastal road next to a beach. We were looking at a snow bunting. A car went by and someone shouted ‘ get an ******* life’. Obviously they had never heard of keeping a welcome in the hillside, or the pleasure to be got from simple things. We might go back tomorrow.
I did want to go the tip but when I tried to book a slot I was informed that I had already been four times in 28 days and would have to wait.
Bird of the day was a cattle egret which flew over the allotment as a support act.
