Three woodpeckers and a dunnock

Much bird activity in our garden today, but sadly no wrens. (I live in hope!)

First thing this morning it was obvious that the birds are, like us, beginning to feel the cold, because they were tucking in to breakfast as fast as they could. I put out some fat balls a week ago, and had thought it was probably a bit early, but clearly not.

Altogether today I’ve seen blue tits, great tits, a robin, a dunnock, lots of goldfinches, a blackbird and (possibly) a female chaffinch, plus the usual quantity of pigeons and magpies. On top of that, we’ve had both a male and female woodpecker – and yesterday we had a green woodpecker as well, digging deep holes in our lawn.

It’s so lovely to have all this avian activity so close to our house; we have been able to get out and about even less than usual for the past few days because my husband hasn’t felt too good, so I’m really grateful for the visitors who come to say hello.
