Day 29 - a wonderful art gallery

We had to start the beautiful sunny day with boring housekeeping - or rather, Van-keeping - jobs. I coped with a cold shower last night as the water heating went off. While investigating, Mr C found that he’d left both LPG taps on - no wonder he thought it was lasting so well - in fact we were nearly out of both canisters but that wasn’t bad considering we’d used it for 4 weeks. However it’s not easy to come by in Denmark. Luckily he located a provider which meant a detour on our way south. It cost £2 a litre. Then we had to find a place to get rid of grey waste - that was just off the motorway on our way to Aalborg so we got rid of both black and grey there. Sorted by 11am.

I was keen to see Kunstern Modern Art Gallery, designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, in Aarborg. It was the usual pantomime of circling round a car park looking for a space so we drove to the gallery. Spaces in their limited car park were full so we turned into a side street and parked there with no restrictions and only 10 minutes from the gallery. It was a beautiful building which really worked well and the exhibits were so placed as to show both them and the gallery to great effect. It did cost £15 each to go in but we both enjoyed it and the garden. Most of the work was by Danish artists so a revelation to me. They were of their time, especially the 1960s ones.

Downstairs they had a Pierre Huyghe show. It was so dark I couldn’t see anything and thought I might walk into something precious, destroying it all. The write-up said it comprised 6 works “presenting complex systems of diverse life forms - biotic and abiotic - and is generated by an unresolved conflict between determinate rules and unpredictable occurrences”. My unresolved conflict was how to find the exit as the occurrence of me falling over was very predictable.

After lunch in the sun in an aire by the E45 we headed towards museum Silkeborg, Hovengarden. However when we got there it had just closed. I should have remembered things close early for ‘winter’. So we had to retrace our journey towards Aarhus where we hope to go tomorrow for the gallery opening time. The Silkeborg museum might be on our way tomorrow.

We have a lovely quiet spot for tonight by a lake and the sun is shining.
