The worst of the rain fell during the night. We'd been contemplating deferring our survey work until tomorrow, but in the end we decided to grit our teeth and get on with it. After an hour of induction at the brickworks we were taken up to the quarry in their four-by-four, where we found we were in a cloud - no views of Morecombe Bay and the Lake District today!

It rained on and off for pretty much the whole of the five hours we were up there, though fortunately it was never very heavy and we were only monitoring two of the three usual areas. I'd taken a Weatherwriter but by the end of the day was still struggling to prevent my forms from dissolving. Our thick coats kept our bodies dry but our legs and feet were saturated, and as the wind got up it started feeling very chilly. We've never been so glad to see the vehicle that came to take us back down!

Nevertheless, we got the work done and I have to say it was quite atmospheric. The wet conditions really made the yellow of Lemon-scented Fern stand out against the Heather, and the mosses were also looking very happy!
