Caiplie Caves

I’ve been coming to Elie since the late 1950s and until yesterday I had never seen let alone heard of the Caiplie Caves.
They were created naturally due to waves eroding the sandstone.

It was a beautiful morning for exploring the part of the Fife Coastal Path which runs from Callardyke to Crail with the caves being about halfway along the path. The closer we got the more dramatic the stone formations appeared. Originally the caves were the site of early Christian worship and then they were used by farmers to house livestock.

We sat on a suitable stone and enjoyed our flask of coffee while watching other families stopping to do some exploring of the amazing rock formations.
