Whitby Day 1 - backblip

We drove into Whitby this morning, found a parking spot, eventually and joined the throngs of tourists and dogs to experience Whitby for the first time and weren't disappointed.  Took a trip on one of the Pirate boats out into the North Sea, nice and rough, had our first glimpse of the magnificent Abbey, a good mooch round a lot of the quaint and interesting narrow cobbled streets and finally a wander round the fascinating harbour.

After a late lunch we drove to Grosmont as we gleaned from the Tourist Information that the NYMR were holding a 4 day Steam Train Gala starting on Thursday, so we thought we'd go to find out first hand.  We spent the rest of the afternoon soaking up the atmosphere on this lovely old station.  I'm not a true train spotter but love everything to do with steam and saw some amazing engines, even got an invitation to get up on the footplate of Engine 80136 and have a good look into the engine's workings.  It made my day, and the driver was gorgeous too!!

We booked up for a whole day of steam on Thursday.
