House of Memories

The Timaru Boys' High School Memorial Library was opened in 1924. It was designed by Percy Watts Rule and was built as a memorial to commemorate the 52 Old Boys who sacrificed their lives in World War One. In 1955 the building was extended and a memorial window erected in memory of the 133 past pupils who died in World War Two.

It was built in the Free Classical, and Art and Craft style, and has a NZ Historic Places category 1 listing.

Next to the library is a monument to Jack Lovelock, a former pupil, who won New Zealand's first gold medal for athletics, at the 1936 Olympics. The library also houses Lovelocks medals.

And that's today's history lesson!

The weather's been really good today; sunny and reasonably warm. I had lots of outdoor activities planned, but have had to shelve them as I'm feeling a bit under the weather today. It's probably my body struggling to cope with the sudden drop in temperature in the last couple of days.

Oh well, there's always tomorrow...
