Green Cape Lighthouse, Eden

Today we drive from Eden to Lakes Entrance, a journey that takes less than three hours if you don’t stop, but where’s the fun if you don’t stop? We take the scenic route, which includes a one-hour round trip down an unpaved bumpy road through Beowa National Park and all the way out to Green Cape Lighthouse. It is ideal terrain for a 4-wheel drive, but not our SUV, so I take it slowly, avoiding the potholes where I can.

I’m a sucker for a good lighthouse, and this one’s rather picturesque, as are the keepers’ cottages. It’s the southernmost and second tallest lighthouse in New South Wales, built in 1883 and heritage-listed. There’s a shipwreck cemetery (the Ly-ee-moon Graveyard), a telegraph station, and, before you get to the lighthouse, a view of the appropriately-named Disaster Bay.
