Autumn Light

In a sheltered valley today, in East Devon, most of the trees still had a dense canopy of green. The colours though are gently turning, and where leaves have fallen on the ground they often display wonderful patterns and colours. From a distance the appearance of this tree looked rather dull and uniform, but a closer look revealed the bright red berries and the autumn colours in the leaves. Later, whilst picking some large, juicy, eating apples from a tree, my mind went back to something I read today about the famine in Somalia. The picture of people and animals starving to death in a dry and arid land is difficult to reconcile with the relative abundance of nature we enjoy around us.
