River Severn Crossings Times Three

Just spent a really good couple of hours around the site of the old Aust Ferry. So many photos to chose from but thought this one was interesting as it shows three crossings.

What is left of the Aust Ferry landing stage was originally opened in 1827, then closed in 1860 only to re-open in 1926 to finally close in 1966 - which was the year that the First Severn Bridge opened, to the right of the picture. Far left is the so-called Second Severn Crossing which marks the official start of the Severn Estuary and which opened in 1996.

In fact, the eagle-eyed may spot a fourth crossing but not one for passengers. The Aust Severn Powerline Crossing has the longest powerline span in the UK at over one mile.
