Turkey Vulture Trivia

A flock of vultures in flight is called a 'kettle'. If the flock is just sitting around resting, in trees or on the ground, it's called a 'committee'. And if those vultures are dining on their very favorite food, carrion (the longer deceased the better), then you are witnessing a 'wake of vultures'.
We have a small flock of year 'round Turkey Vulture residents. This committee's numbers increase in the winter when the 'snow bird' turkey vultures arrive from points north. My neighbor feeds them dry kitty food so they hang around in front of her house. This one was showing off his/her impressive wing spread. They really are quite handsome birds, IMHO anyway. Since many of them tend to roost in our tall backyard trees at night, I was concerned about the dogs licking up vulture poop. Not to worry said our vet...vulture poop is some of the cleanest stuff around. The bacteria in their guts kill any dangerous organisms from what they eat. That makes sense to me. And since I can't keep the dogs from doing what dogs do, I'll go with that. No issues so far and that's been over many years.
Enough Vulture Trivia? I'm guessing so. Have an Enjoyable Weekend.
