Linde

A sunny Sunday. I spent an hour on the patio, reading and knitting, before going for a walk.

I really like this huge, old lime tree (Linde in German) growing among the vineyards. The extra shows the same tree from another angle.

Lime or linden trees used to have a special place in many German villages, for dances as well as for council and court assemblies.

My mother’s village always used to have a Dorflinde in its centre. As I grew up there, it was an old tree - almost as big as this one in the vineyards. When it came down in a storm about 20 years ago, everyone mourned it like an old friend - and then they planted a new one, because the village didn’t feel complete without its lime tree.
