The McEwan, Fountainbridge

This site was part of Scottish and Newcastle Brewery that closed in 2005.  I've lost count and memory of the iterations this site has gone through in the last 17 years.  In 2008 the Bank of Scotland bought the land next to the canal to build its new global headquarters but as it turns out 2008 wasn't the best year for the financial services sector so that didn't work out.  In 2011 the EDI group (arms length company of the Council) bought that land from the banking group with a view to using it for the new Boroughmuir School and housing.

Meanwhile the land across the road was bought by Grosvenor Developments et al to build flats for sale.  Time moves on.  In 2020 they started to build 476 flats that would be for rent.  It was William McEwan who established the Fountain Brewery in 1856 and these rental flats have been named after him.
