Two different walks

Another lovely autumn day with sunny intervals and mild temperatures. Bertie and I had two very different walks during the day. The first was in the deciduous woodland on the slopes of Lee Pen, a hill above Innerleithen, within walking distance of where we are staying. We came across lots of fallen nuts from sweet chestnut trees but none were large enough to be worth gathering so we left them for the woodland inhabitants.

After meeting N for lunch down by the river, we headed over to the south side of the river to explore a community woodland adjoining a Site of Special Scientific Interest which I had visited once quite a few years ago. It is an area of ancient woodland with, amongst other things, some oak trees up to 500 years old. It was a very enjoyable walk, punctuated with information points along the way. The extra contains one such example: a picnic table with a laminated surface illustrating the mini beasts that can be found in these woods.
