Great White Heron

The Great White Heron - Ardea herodias occidentalis

A reasonably rare bird that is mostly found in the southern part of Florida, but some of the non-breeding adults will make their way farther north. This one came from The La Chua Trail today. Here is a link to a close up of the head....

This is an interesting bird in that it has waffled back and forth between its own species and a sub-species of the Great Blue Heron. Most of what I can find list it as a sub-species, although there is once again some push to take it back to it own species. Either way, I find it a very interesting bird.
